You build your project as normal in iMovie and iDVD, specifying that you're burning to a double-layer disc in the Project Info window, then produce a disc image which you import into Toast. You can also use Toast to overcome iDVD's 90-minute limit on single-layer DVDs. You'll quickly learn to keep your menu and button titles short otherwise Toast will unexpectedly truncate them. One major frustration in Toast is the complete lack of DVD-preview capabilities, which means you can't check menu operation or title and button labels before burning. You can choose one of ten menu templates for the disc they are generally attractive, but not editable.

The file played perfectly, indicating an accurate bit-for-bit restoration. We spanned a 1.2GB video file over two CD-R discs, and then restored the file on a different computer.

Unlike Mac OS X backups, Toast backups can span multiple discs, and the restore software that's automatically added to each burned disc lets you restore the data on any Macintosh (but not Windows) computer. Specifically, backing up 4.17GB of files to a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-109 on our Dual 2.6 GHz PowerPC G5 took 8 minutes 35 seconds with Toast and 8:40 using OS X's internal disc-burning facility. Don't expect Toast to speed your backups significantly, however, as we saw little performance difference on our tests.
When it comes to backing up data, Toast's disc-burning capabilities are more intuitive than those of Mac OS X-especially if you're used to working with a dedicated program or wizard for selecting files and burning options, as most Windows programs offer, rather than using an extension of Mac OS's Finder.
